Calculation is very much important for all of us. But for a student of science it is  like gift from god. A science student cannot take him away from calculation. Simple calculations can be done by by anyone but what about complex ones. Today we at eStudyan will give you all an important tool of mathematics which will help you in solving some complex problems.so let's start.

Today we shall learn about logarithms. Logarithms can be used in finding any exponent of any number. Basically logarithm says us that at what power of given number we get a specific value. Suppose anyone says 10 raise to power 2 will give you  100 as result. In logarithm we represent this statement as   log10100=2. So it is clear that by logarithm we can find both power and the result we get after raising a certain number with some power. I hope you understood this.

The tool logarithm has two types of table, log table and antilog table. We shall learn how to use these tables in this article ahead.
 But before that you have to keep in mind some formulas related to logarithm which will  help you in solving some problems related to log identities.

Logarithm formulas

   1. logamn =loga m + logan  
   2.loga (m/n)= logam - logan
   3.logabn = n logab
   4.logab=X.   is same as aX = b

  {In above above formulas a is representing base of log.}

 However, we shall not get into the derivation of these formulas. 

Logarithm can be calculated by taking any number as base but in general we use logarithm by taking 10 as base. Our log and antilog table is also based on 10 base.

Now let's learn  how to read logarithm tables. 
In logarithm there are two tables one is log table and other is antilog table. 

let's first learn to read Log table.

Rule 1:- Write the given number in scientific notation form. I hope you know about scientific notation.

Rule 2:- From log table locate first two digits of given number (negleting decimal) to first row of given log table.

Rule 3:- Now go horizontally straight in log table and locate the third digit of your given number. ( Write this result in rough).

Rule 4:- In this log table you will find an area named mean difference. You have to just go horizontally straight from where you left off and locate the fourth digit of your given number in mean difference. Add this value to the number whichever you have written in rough.

Rule 5:- Write the result in decimal form in such a way that no digit of the result comes before decimal. Suppose you got 5678 as result , you write it as 0.5678.

Rule 6:-  In writing scientific notation you must have got some power of 10. If positive then add this value to above result. If power of 10 is negative then subtract it from result according to general rule of integers. Gotcha! If you done all above things right then  you learned to read log table.


Now let's learn to read antilog table.


Rule 1:- Write the given number in such a way that no digit of your given number comes before decimal ( just like rule 6 of log table).

Rule 2:- locate first two digit of this result ( after decimal) in antilog table.

Rule 3:- Go horizontally straight and locate the third digit.  ( Write this in rough ).

Rule 4:- Go horizontally straight in the column of mean difference and locate the fourth digit. Add this value to the result you written in rough.

Rule 5:-  In writing the given number according to rule 1 of antilog table , you must have got 10 with some power . Just multiply this from the result which you got by proceeding till rule 4.
