Why is sky blue?

 Our sky is the most prestigious sky in the solar system because it is the only sky in this solar system which has this much differences in the composition of different type of gases in its atmosphere.

But have you ever wondered! why it is blue ? not black or any other colour. Well there is a interesting physics behind it. Before going on that concept let me tell you some history of it.( For main explanation just scroll down👇).

In ancient times many Greek physicist wondered about the blue colour of sky. One of them gave his thesis that God is watching from the sky, due to his blue eyes the sky looks blue. But as the science grow his thesis was only thought to be mythological thought which not get much attention of the modern scientists.

Much more investigation s happen and another theory came which says that sky colour is due to the blue colour of ocean. But this also gets rejected by the modern scientists because why does sky appears blue in deserts.

Then came the modern theory which is given by John Tyndall. He said that sky colour is blue due to the scattering of blue component of sunlight in the atmosphere. Before explaining this let me define Tyndall effect.

The scattering of light by particles in its path is called Tyndall effect.

Based on the above effect we can explain why the sky is blue? So let's learn about that.

Main explanation:-

The sunlight ☀️ reach to us through earth's atmosphere. Our atmosphere contains many gases and dust particles in it. The coming sunlight is a white light which consists of seven colours called VIBGYOR (Violet,indigo,blue,green,yellow,orange,red).

In atmosphere the sunlight ☀️ strikes with particles of atmosphere and gets scattered randomly. We know that greatest wavelength colour gets least scattered and vice versa. So blue colour gets most scattered in the sky due to which sky appears blue to us.

This concept helps to answer the question that why the space appears black to the astronauts in the space. The clear reason is there is no particles sufficient for scattering of light.
